Language & Literacy

At St. Alban’s Early Childhood Center, we understand the powerful connection between language and literacy.  Operating from the premise that early literacy is considered the most important academic skill in school readiness, since most school learning depends upon knowing how to read, we encourage continuous opportunities for children to speak, listen, read, and write.

Throughout our daily routine we focus on the following language and literacy goals:

  • Comprehension- the process of deriving meaning from action, speech, and text by connecting what one is learning to what one already knows.
  • Phonological awareness- the process of recognizing the sounds that make-up words.
  • Alphabetic principle -the process of learning the relationship between letters and sounds in oral and written language.
  • Concepts about print – the process of understanding how print is organized on the page and how it is used for reading and writing.
